World Breastfeeding Week Celebration

The first week of August is World Breastfeeding Week (WBW). Celebrations are held around the world to honor this tender way of nourishing and nurturing our children. The theme for 2007, set by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), was Breastfeeding: The 1st Hour - Save One Million Babies. Pregnant women should expect to spend the first hour after birth lying skin-to-skin with their baby, getting acquainted with each other and allowing baby to nurse.

Burlington's Celebration, sponsored by the Chittenden County Breastfeeding Promotion Coalition and La Leche League of Burlington, was held on August 4th, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm, at Contois Auditorium in City Hall, on Church Street, downtown Burlington.

All pregnant women, adopting and nursing mothers, breastfeeding families, children, and those interested in supporting breastfeeding in the entire community were invited. The celebration featured a nursing-wear fashion show. We approached local Burlington-area fashion designers to help us. There were presentations on prenatal yoga and prenatal massage, snacks, and a Breastfeeding Cafe, where women shared their breastfeeding experiences. There was also a sling wearing demonstration. Older children were entertained by Green Mountain Music Together, face painting, and children's activites. The celebration ended with a parade down Church Street with the flags and hats the children created.

Timely initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour after birth is beneficial for both the baby and the mother because:

  • Colostrum provides the baby with nourishment (the baby needs very little at this time - a few drops are enough) and thus, its first immunization.
  • It helps the encourage milk production..
  • It makes use of the baby's sucking reflex (which is strongest during the 1st hour) to establish proper latching.
  • It helps to prevent blood loss in the mother.
  • It provides skin-to-skin contact and warmth that babies need most, particularly premature and low-weight babies.
  • It is more beneficial for low-weight babies because they are more likely to die, and they need more support at birth to be able to suck well.
