LLL in the USA World Breastfeeding Week Celebrations Grants

Annually, five percent of the total income raised at all World Breastfeeding Week Celebrations is set aside in the US Divisions' Joint Projects fund.

In 2007 seven Groups in the USA applied for and were awarded grants totaling $6150.

  • La Leche League in Wilmington, NC - $500 for materials to start a new Group for low-income Spanish-speaking mothers, in conjunction with a local Hispanic outreach center.
  • La Leche League of Garland Spanish, TX - $500 to establish a Spanish Group library, as well as information sheets for hospital distribution.
  • La Leche League of Chapel Hill North/A.M., NC - $1500 for a lecture series and books for resident physicians plus at-risk new mother clinic breastfeeding support packages.
  • La Leche League of Cumberland/Lincoln, RI - $650 to establish a relationship with ten health-care providers providing reference books and new mother breastfeeding packets for their offices.
  • La Leche League of Delta County, MI - $1400 to be combined with a community grant to put LLL material in the hospital Welcome Newborn tote bag. Information sheets will be attached to Comfort Bears wearing an LLL logo t-shirt.
  • La Leche League of Southern Indiana, KY/TN - $1200 for expectant mother packets to be given to physicians’ offices/hospitals and for nurse appreciation.
  • La Leche League of Platte Co., WY - $400 for a billboard to announce a new Group, in conjunction with other community advertising.

The 2008 grants will be awarded in May 1, 2008. Grants are open to any USA Group or Leader for activities that help fulfill the mission of La Leche League. The deadline for grant application submission is March 31, 2008.

The 2008 kits will be ready March 31, 2008.

Go for the Gold!

You can "go for the gold" when you --

  • give a mother the phone number of an LLL Leader.
  • tell a first-time breastfeeding mother she is doing just fine.
  • bring the new mother a nutrious snack and a big glass of water.
  • as an employer, accommodate a mother's need to pump with a private comfortable space.
  • as the baby's father, intercede with family and friends so that mother and baby can feel confident
  • write to legislators to support the enactment of laws supporting paid maternity leave and mother-friendly workplaces.
  • contact an emergency relief organization and request training to help in emergency situations, especially in breastfeeding support.
  • take care of your health and nutritional needs during pregnancy and lactation.
  • set up or join a network of lactation experts in your community.
  • provide transportation to a mother to attend an LLL meeting or visit a lactation consultant.
  • advocate for legislation that enacts the provisions of the WHO/UNICEF Code of Marketing.
  • ask for support and offer support to others.
