Professional Liaison Department

The Professional Liaison (PL) Leader assists the Group Leader with additional resources and support for complex breastfeeding issues that often arise from challenging medical and legal questions. While not providing medical or legal adivce, PL Leaders can help the Leader frame her responses to the mother in a way that empowers her to make informed decisions.
The Leader's Digest is a quick update of current research to help you help mothers breastfeed! LLL Alliance will provide these practical summaries of important research in an easy-to-read format.

Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding
The U.S. Surgeon General has identified 20 evidence-based actions that are needed to support breastfeeding, including establishing worksite policies and programs, implementing maternity care practices in hospitals and birthing facilities, reducing marketing of infant formula, and ensuring access to services provided by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs).
The Surgeon General has chosen to focus on breastfeeding because of its importance in promoting women’s and children’s health, and its potential for significant health care cost savings through preventive action.
The Call to Action includes 20 recommended Actions to help support breastfeeding. Some of these are already being done by Leaders every day, and while others are not so directly within an LLL Leader’s scope, it is important for all of us to be aware of them. To read a summary of the 20 Actions and how they relate to LLL Leaders, prepared by LLL Alliance Council members, click here: Action Summary.pdf
