Understand anger, deal with differences, I-messages, setting limits, and mutual problem solving.

B. Interactive Group Leading
Evaluate your own group leading skills; generate open, non-threatening discussion; deal with difficult people through role playing; get and keep control of the Group meeting.

101 Demystifying the Road to Accreditation
A step-by-step review of how to get from start to finish on your application. Helping both Applicants and sponsoring Leaders see the bigger picture and how to effectively work together.


102 The Breastfeeding Helpline
Interested in taking a shift on the Helpline? Hear from a Leader who does it. This interactive session will include the basics of taking a call, logging the information, the resources available, how difficult calls are handled, as well as the satisfaction you'll receive from this work.


103 Reaching Diverse Mothers
A discussion of barriers to reaching underserved populations in your Area, innovative ideas to break down those barriers and form community alliances, and resources to make this happen. The benefits of expanding LLLI support to all mothers and babies.

104 Advertising 101
Ways in which advertising can help Areas and local Groups reach out to the general population and also how advertising revenue from LLL-friendly businesses can boost your budget.


105 Parenting Your Parents
Balancing our responsibilities to aging parents with the needs of our own families, employment, LLL, and ourselves.


106 Case Studies
A look at case studies, working with mothers in unusual situations, and practicing your responses as a Leader.



107 Design-a-Card    (AL & NY only)
Discover how fun creating a unique homemade card can be. Supplies fee $5.


107 Family Memories   (VT only)
Keeping track of family memories is about more than just scrapbooking photos. Ideas to create memories that will become part of your family lore and ways to pass on the adventures.

201 Write Your Personal History!
Overcome writer’s block as you work together to explore the ten concepts of LLL philosophy and required reading.


202 Getting Over the Guilt in Fundraising
We all believe in LLL, so why do many of us feel guilty asking for money? Discuss these feelings and ways to cope with them. Includes practical tips on membership drives and fundraising ideas.


203 Retaining the Young and the Restless
What keeps a young mother coming back to LLL meetings? Join in a discussion with Leaders aged 20/30-something on what they found valuable about LLL and the benefits young mothers bring to LLL Groups.


204 The Art of Asking Questions
Ways to ask questions and impart information in a way that builds rapport and trust with the person you are helping, especially when you can't rely on body language. The importance of documentation of each call, email, or helping situation and resources available to Leaders and an exercise to evaluate if your description matches what the other person is hearing.


205 Gizmos, Gadgets and Hand Expression
The proper and appropriate use of breastfeeding devices, including cup feeders, pumps and supplemental nutrition systems. A demonstration on how to perform hand-expression as an alternative.


206 Ethics and LLL Leaders

An overview of the codes of ethics for La Leche League International and the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. An interactive discussion of situations which have ethical implications and the ethical resolution of those situations.


207 Beading 101
Bring a project you're working on or come ready to make an LDS souvenir bracelet or necklace. Supplies fee: $5 for one, $10 for two.



Session 3 1:30-3:00 pm

301 Check it off!
Exploring the checklist in LEADER’S HANDBOOK and completing another piece of the application journey. Includes information on how your Area and the EUS fit into LLLI.


302 Creative Community Outreach
Unique meeting venues such as Breastfeeding Cafés, Baby Fairs, World Breastfeeding Week Celebrations, and other outreach activities. Explore creative ideas for positively connecting to your community. 


303 Ages and Stages of Leadership

A session that explores the unique perspectives and experiences of Leaders at various stages in their lives and mothering. We accept mothers where they are and we need to accept each other too. Let’s dispel the myths about what younger/older mothers think or about what new/seasoned Leaders have to offer. 


304 Whole Foods for the Whole Series
Threading the whole foods concept through the entire series of meetings, including healthy snacks and sharing recipes.


305 The WHO Code

Understanding what it is, why LLL uses it as a basis for its acceptance of donations, advertisers, and exhibitors, and why it is so important to nursing mothers and babies everywhere.


306 Getting it Right

An interactive session on ways to assist with baby's positioning and latch at the breast. Each attendee will have an opportunity to experience each of three roles: Leader, observer, and mother.

 

307 Body Art
Have fun with the ancient art of henna and tattoos that are temporary. Supplies fee $5.

401 The Breastfeeding Bowl

Join a fun game that will help you complete the Breastfeeding Resource Guide. Also open to those who wish to brush up on basic breastfeeding knowledge.


402 Mothering Through Breastfeeding
Discuss ways to represent and share the fullness of LLLI philosophy with mothers. Sharing the gift of mothering through breastfeeding, rather than just the basics of breastfeeding, throughout the entire meeting series.


403 Mixing Causes

Understanding when wearing two hats is not the right thing to do. Why maintaining the one cause policy/integrity of LLL is important.


404 Grandparenting Today-Joys & Challenges

How does LLL philosophy impact our lives as grandparents? What if we disagree with our children's choices? Information, encouragement, and support for the joys and challenges of this life stage.


405 Taming the Email Tiger
Overwhelmed with email? This interactive session will show options for organizing your email in different programs, tips on searching/finding things you need, and ways to back up your files without killing so many trees. BYO laptop, though not required.


406 Helping the Large-Breasted Woman to Breastfeed

Positioning, getting the correct latch, and engorgement are common concerns of the amply-endowed mother. Understanding the challenges of nursing with large breasts and/or large nipples, including skin difficulties, finding the right bra, and breast pumps that fit.


407 Creating a Mocktail Party

A hands-on experience of putting together mocktails and appetizers with very little time & effort. Take home recipes and ideas for fun with friends and family. Supplies fee $5.

Session 5 8:30-9:45 am

501 Preview Practice
A role-play session to practice situations from the Preview.


502 Your Area's Online Needs
Each Area's online needs are different. Discuss the possibilities, ideas for finding the right person (or persons) who can be an Online Coordinator(s) with the skills needed, discovering ways the Area Database Administrator position works and how both of these fit into the support structure of your Team; Overview of Division support for Web pages, online registration for events, and more.


503 Making Lemonade

Working as a Area Team to find solutions to situations that seem like the end of the earth. Problem-solve and discover ways you can work together to reach solutions.


504 Overcoming Bias
Accepting and helping the mother whose lifestyle and/or parenting choices differ from our own; How to recognize and set aside personal biases--even if the Leader has never been there (and has no plans to go there, either!)


505 Creating Your Own Niche
Not Active with a Group? On Reserve? Do you work with LLL in non-traditional ways? Meet with others and share the ways you are supported and how you would like to be supported by your Area and Division.


506 Low Milk Supply

Working with mothers with a real or perceived low milk supply: identifying causes and mother concerns, developing a plan to build the supply.


Session 6  10:00-11:15 am

601 She said What?
Effective ways of dealing with difficult meeting situations such the mother who monopolizes the meeting, a topic outside the scope of LLL, and much more.


602 DA-ing for the Next 50 Years

Many things have changed but never the need for District Advisors. Join with DCs and DAs to discuss what's important and ways to have fun while doing it.


603 Building Bridges
An opportunity for Area Team members to maximize team effectiveness through different exercises that build rapport and enhance trust and respect.


604 Online Tools to Boost Efficiency
Make your administrative LLL work easier by using computer and internet tools to increase efficiency. Using the electronic editing function in Microsoft Word and Google to edit documents, publications, and spreadsheets.


605 Don't Believe Everything You Read
Assessing headlines, interpreting the credibility of breastfeeding news in the media, and critical reading of breastfeeding information on Web sites and in research studies.


606 What's the Bigger Picture?
Helping mothers and babies, leading a Group and working with Leader Applicants are the basics of LLL but there is more. A discussion of what a Leader can do outside of the Group to help LLL, even after you've weaned your last child and other volunteer opportunities are calling your name. Ways to balance the work while staying in touch with mothers and babies.
