Area Conferences

An Area Conference is a forum for parenting education, using LLLI philosophy as the criteria for presentations and highlighting the talents and expertise of an Area’s Leaders, Leader Applicants, and Group members. Area Conferences are designed to appeal to breastfeeding families, with sessions to enhance breastfeeding relationships as well as parenting skills. Many offer topics geared especially for fathers, as well as fun things for children to do in sessions, play areas, and with special guests.

An Area Conference provides the opportunity for growth: personal growth of Leaders and growth of the Area through contacts between parents, LLL members, Leaders, and Area Council members.

Area Conferences fulfill these LLLI Strategic Plan objectives:

• Focus on mother-to-mother support
• Build volunteer network and reach currently underserved populations
• Build LLL awareness among mothers, mothers-to-be, and the general public

Healthcare Provider Seminars (HPSs)

The purpose of an HPS is to offer continuing education on breastfeeding topics to healthcare providers. They provide opportunities for Lactation Consultants to earn Continuing Education Recognition Points (IBCLC CERPS) and RNs to earn nursing CEUs.

Healthcare Provider Seminars fulfill these LLLI Strategic Plan objectives:

• Build LLL credibility to be the first referral from HCPs and health agencies
• Build LLL awareness among mothers, mothers-to-be, and the general public

Leader Development Seminars (LDS)

Leader Development Seminars are a celebration of the work La Leche League Leaders and Leader Applicants do. Many find that the more they connect with other Leaders, the more energized they are and the more appreciative they feel about their work. It is one of the intangible paychecks of LLL leadership.

LDSs are a weekend of continuing education, fun, and friendship in a university setting. Just as the women at Group meetings learn mother-to-mother, they provide a wonderful opportunity to learn skills for Group management, breastfeeding education, and communication techniques Leader-to-Leader.

LDS speakers are Leaders with special areas of expertise and experience. Besides offering a wonderful selection of topics, these seminars provide time to meet with Leaders and Leader Applicants from many Areas and share the common threads that link them together.

Leader Development Seminars fulfill this LLLI Strategic Plan objective:

• Build volunteer network and reach currently underserved populations

Continuing Education Credits

Leaders and Leader Applicants have the opportunity to upgrade their skills at LLL-sponsored conferences and workshops, and by earning LLL-EUS CEU credit, Leaders have tangible evidence of their expertise. The LLL-EUS CEU program encourages all Leaders to fulfill their responsibility for continuing their LLL education. Topics awarding LLL-EUS CEU credits are designed to improve a Leader’s effectiveness in her role by enhancing skills in breastfeeding education, organization and management, and communication. A Leader or Leader Applicant can receive CEUs at Chapter Meetings, District Workshops, CSE sessions, Area Conferences, and Leader Development Seminars.

Areas have the option of applying for Continuing Education Recognition Points (CERPs) for their events through the EUS providership with the International Board of Certified Lactation Examiners (IBCLE). CERP topics are often technical in nature and generally are offered at an HPS where the program is geared for healthcare providers or as a technical track at an Area Conference. CERPs are awarded for topics that specifically relate to breastfeeding; breastfeeding topics that qualify for LLL-EUS CEUs (BE) often automatically qualify for CERP credit.
